BABIES
I’m in the age and situation where having a child is an everyday topic. But I feel a struggle, an anomaly with the world. Namely how we can imagine the future when all we hear is that the world is ending? I created these sculptures from this distress.
The features of these monstrous BABIES are symbolising the very essence of the human nature in the light of the momentary state of our planet. Their overdeveloped teeth are for craving, craving more and more. Their missing limbs and deformed body speaks about imbalance, a kind of unnatural existence.
Yet, there is something kind in them, as if they almost smile. And I think back on the babies (actual human babies) and I tell to myself: but didn't the craving make humans for what they become? The big innovations, the great explorations in human history were possible because of the craving, because we went against the nature and because of our imbalance we are constantly searching for new and new states of harmony.
This series of sculptures are made in the mindset of acceptance and responsibility. Acceptance of our unnatural nature could lead the way to a more responsible attitude toward our actions. Moreover these babies are a positive memento for an ever existing future.
